I’ve always known and imagined myself wanting to be someone who helps break down barriers and stereotypes for future generations. Since I was 6 years old and would watch the High School Musical franchise on replay, I knew I wanted to be an actress and as I got older, my love expanded from actress to director and writer. Either in front of the camera or behind, I want to be able to create something that can become someone’s inspiration, their “feel seen” movie. As a Latina, I didn’t have many of those relatable movies. The Hispanics that were supposed to “represent” us, didn’t look like me and were based on stereotypes. I want to be able to create the accurate representation that certain cultures crave and desire, especially in an industry that has been centered around white men. I’ll show accurate representations by casting people from that culture, doing my research, and finding out what is true and what is actually a Hollywood-fed stereotype. It is important to showcase what is actually true about different people because with false information can create this negative ideology. I was taught by the media this is how I have to look and act, and it’s an unfair statement to put in the heads of young women, and it took a while for me to realize I don’t have to act like how Hollywood wants me to be. It is why my mission is to be a part of a new standard in Hollywood where people within my culture and others don’t have to feel like they must submit to old-school Hollywood society standards.
